Browser automation framework used by QA teams for end-to-end tests and by AI agents that need to drive the real web.
Selenium is the oldest browser-automation project in wide use (Apache-2.0, since 2004). You run a container like selenium/standalone-chrome and point WebDriver clients at it over JSON-wire or W3C protocol.
Who uses it: QA engineers writing E2E tests, agent authors who need stable browser control (Selenium Grid scales horizontally), and anyone sandboxing an untrusted browser session on a server. Playwright and Puppeteer are younger alternatives with nicer APIs for Chromium-only work; Selenium is the pick when you need Firefox, Safari, or multi-browser parity.
