Browser-hosted VS Code. Used for remote development and as an editor surface for AI coding agents.
code-server (MIT, from Coder) runs the real VS Code binary and serves its UI over HTTPS. Point a browser at it from anywhere and you have the same editor, extensions, and terminal as a local install — except the compute, filesystem, and credentials stay on the server.
Who uses it: developers coding from an iPad or Chromebook, teams running shared dev environments on beefy VMs or k8s pods, and AI-agent authors who want a persistent editor state the agent reads and writes. Alternatives: GitHub Codespaces (SaaS), Gitpod (SaaS or self-hostable), the full Coder product (code-server + workspace lifecycle). Pick code-server when "I just need a browser editor" is the whole requirement.
